Beyond the original “Big Three” of online casino play, Pennsylvania came in to legalize online casino play even before the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was overturned.

That’s important to note because following PASPA being overturned, online sportsbooks started popping up more and more, and thus, online casinos came as a companion to the online sportsbook in other legal states.

Having been in business in the online casino space for nearly five years now, let’s take a closer look at The Keystone State, including the current online casinos available, games you can play, banking methods, and the history of how PA online casino play came to be.

Online Casino Play In Pennsylvania Today

Although PA online casino play became legal in 2017, to be fair, it did take a bit of time before these online casinos were able to get off the ground and become playable.

In fact, the first PA online casino to launch in the state was Parx and Hollywood Casino in July 2019.

Today, however, there are plenty more options than that.

Below is a complete list of online casinos available in Pennsylvania.

Registering at an Online Casino in Pennsylvania

If you’re new to PA online casino play, before you do anything, you’ll need to create an account.

While this is of course expected, the contents of the registration process are something that you’ll want to be aware of so that you’re not overwhelmed upon checking it out.

The option to register will be available in a link in the upper right-hand corner regardless of what site you visit.

Below is a complete list of the information you’ll likely need to provide during the registration process, including screenshots from DraftKings Casino as an example.

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of Birth
  • Security Questions
  • Last Four Digits of Social Security Number
  • Agree to terms and conditions

After you complete the registration process, you may be asked to further verify your information. This usually happens if you’ve moved recently and the internal system at the online casino does not have an up-to-date system.

In this case, you will need to send in a copy of a government-issued ID, but this doesn’t happen often.

Next, the PA online casino will use its geolocation software to confirm your location. You will be asked to consent to this and all this does is track your IP address to ensure you are located in the state of Pennsylvania.

You do not need to be a resident of Pennsylvania, but you do need to be located in the state at the time in which you wish to wager.

The History of Online Casino Play in Pennsylvania

As mentioned in a previous section, Pennsylvania officially welcomed online casino play to the state on October 30, 2017. This came after Governor Tom Wolf signed an omnibus gaming expansion bill into law, otherwise known as HB 271.

Nonetheless, the intention was there as Pennsylvania flirted with the idea of online casino play dating back to when Delaware, Nevada, and New Jersey got in on the action in 2012/2013. This came nearly a decade after Pennsylvania legislators passed Act 71, which progressed the legalization of gambling in the state.

With this legislature passing, Pennsylvania saw its first slot machines in retail casinos land in 14 locations starting in 2006.

Act 71 in Pennsylvania also led to a 2017 bill for Truckstop and Sattelite casinos, which brought about 10 mini-casino sites, and expanded casino play at truck stops.

The first online casinos in the state, however, did not come to the state for about a year and a half with Parx and Hollywood Casino opening in July 2019. With that said, 2019 saw three more casinos join the fold, followed by six in 2020, and finally, three more in 2021.
