The History of Online Casino Play in New Jersey
In the 1990s when the Internet started becoming more popular, online casinos and poker rooms started popping up, but were unregulated and also offshore.
This changed in 2006 when the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act came into effect which meant to crack down on this.
However, the legalization of online casino play in New Jersey dates back to 2003 when Borgata came to the state as a land-based casino and laid out the blueprint for how big-budget projects could develop in Atlantic City. After Borgata, BetMGM also got involved.
As development got started, there was a setback in 2008 due to the United States recession, but despite that, Morgan Stanley and Revel Entertainment Group proceeded with a project that was ultimately completed in 2011.
However, there was a period where casinos, in general, were placed in a bad light—April 15, 2011. This day is known as “Black Friday” as multiple casino owners were found to be in violation of the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
Then, in 2012, Revel filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Despite all of these hurdles, the Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, set out to overhaul the image and integrated online casino play into the state and was successful. The bills A2578/S1565 were passed in December 2012 and signed into law by Christie in February 2013.
In July of the same year, all 12 brick-and-mortar casinos in Atlantic City filed for an online license. This included casinos such as Golden Nugget, Tropicana, Borgata, Caesars, and more.
The tax rate on online slots was set at 15% for online casinos and, in November 2013, the first online casinos launched in the state.
